Doha Old Port Launches the First Edition of Sea Bed Cleaning Initiative

Doha, November 11 / QNA / Today, the Old Port of Doha launched the first edition of the Sea Bed Cleaning Initiative, intended to be an annual event at the port due to the significance of marine life in the history and culture of Qatar. This initiative aligns with the port's goals of environmental conservation and marine life preservation.

In a statement, the port highlighted that the initiative aims to increase awareness among the community, reinforcing the concept that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility. It is part of the port's annual plan and objectives, as well as upcoming events.

Mohammed Abdullah Al Mulla, the Executive Director of the Old Port of Doha, stated that the initiative aims to promote the concept of marine sustainability, raise community awareness, and involve individuals and institutions in environmental initiatives. In support of these plans, the Old Port of Doha announced the opening of registration for volunteer divers through an open invitation on the port's social media platforms, receiving widespread interest with nearly a hundred divers registering within just six days.

The Sea Bed Cleaning Initiative covered extensive areas along the seafront of the port's neighborhood, spanning a length of 650 meters with water depths ranging from 8 to 11 meters, including the Bandar area in front of the "Jabrah Fish Market" with depths ranging from 3 to 5 meters.

Eighteen entities and companies in the country participated in this initiative, with the collective efforts of volunteers extracting large and heavy debris from the site. The cleaning activities continued for over 5 hours in collaboration with the General Cleanliness Department at the Ministry of Municipality, which supported the initiative with specialized maritime equipment for lifting and removing heavy waste from the sea bed.

The initiative received significant interest and extended beyond sea bed cleaning. It included waste sorting on-site under the supervision and management of the specialized Sea Shore team in recycling various types of waste. The sorted waste will be directed to recycling factories specializing in different materials such as metals, paper, plastic, and more.

This initiative serves as a starting point for a series of diverse environmental initiatives that the Old Port of Doha plans to regularly organize. These initiatives aim to affirm its fundamental role in spreading awareness, promoting the culture of marine and wildlife protection in Qatar, focusing on integrating individuals and institutions in contributing to Qatar's Vision 2030 for environmental protection, natural balance, and achieving comprehensive and sustainable development for all generations.
