The State of Qatar affirms its commitment to the stability, prosperity and peace of Afghanistan

New York, November 18 (QNA) - The State of Qatar affirmed its commitment to the stability, prosperity and peace of Afghanistan, and at the same time expressed its growing concern about the worsening humanitarian and economic conditions and human rights violations, stressing its active participation with the international community in peacemaking efforts and support for humanitarian and development efforts in Afghanistan.

This came in the State of Qatar's statement delivered by Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, Third Secretary in the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, at the UN Security Council meeting, which held an Arria-formula session to discuss the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan under the title: "Preventing Collapse" the economy and exploring prospects for recovery and development in Afghanistan.

Sheikh Jassim explained that the active participation of the State of Qatar in Afghanistan since its previous role in mediation was motivated by the commitment to help achieve peace and stability, and to address the humanitarian, economic, security and human rights challenges facing the Afghans, for the benefit of Afghanistan and abroad.

He pointed to Qatar's active diplomatic and political efforts over many years in the context of facilitating negotiations between local and international parties to the conflict to end the war in Afghanistan.

In this context, Sheikh Jassim praised the successful efforts of the State of Qatar in achieving the historic joint declaration between the United States of America and the Taliban to bring peace to Afghanistan in February 2020, which was welcomed by the UN Security Council.

He referred to the current ongoing efforts represented in facilitating and strengthening channels of communication between international partners and the Afghan caretaker government, with regard to promoting peace, protecting civilians, providing humanitarian and development assistance, and protecting and promoting the political, economic and social rights of the Afghan people, including the rights of children, women and girls.

With regard to humanitarian efforts, Sheikh Jassim stated that the State of Qatar has facilitated the evacuation of 80,000 people, including Afghans at great risk and foreign nationals, and provided them with basic support in Doha, including shelter and health care.

The statement also referred to the State of Qatar's implementation of air transport operations for emergency relief and facilitating the delivery of more than 800 tons of aid, noting the conference hosted by the State of Qatar in March 2022 with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Germany and the United Kingdom to alleviate the suffering of Afghans.

In its statement, the State of Qatar stressed the need to move forward, given that humanitarian assistance is vital, stressing the vital importance of Afghanistan achieving lasting peace, sustainable development, rehabilitation and economic stability.

The statement called on all actors and stakeholders to adhere to international humanitarian principles and norms, warning against the politicization of humanitarian and development aid.

He stressed the need for humanitarian endeavors to be subject to a comprehensive and unified regional and international approach, and stronger political will.

Sheikh Jassim called on the Afghan caretaker government to show goodwill to implement the Doha Peace Agreement and to meet the demands of the international community with regard to combating terrorism and the human rights of the Afghan people, especially the rights of women and girls.

He stressed that the social and economic empowerment and inclusion of girls in all aspects of public life is crucial to Afghanistan's political and economic future, stressing the need for an inclusive government as a prerequisite for Afghanistan's unity, stability and prosperity.
