The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly kicked off in New York with the aim of finding effective solutions to many of the crises facing the world at the present time.
The session started under the slogan "Solutions through Solidarity, Sustainability and Science".
In his opening remarks, 77th Session President Tchapa Kuroshi urged world leaders to respond to the most pressing humanitarian challenges, including the war in Ukraine, by working together, and focusing on what unites all.
He stressed that the conflict in Ukraine was a "turning point", and unless the world was vigilant, the war could become part of the "toolbox of international life".
"This war must be stopped," he added, stressing that it kills development, nature and the dreams of millions.
He acknowledged that the world is facing a state of uncertainty and widening geopolitical fissures, recalling that the United Nations was established from the ashes of war and destruction with the aim of being a center for solutions.
In his turn, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said, "In our work to advance peace, human rights and sustainable development, the world faces an imminent danger, from conflict and climate change, to a global financial system that is failing developing countries."
He added that facing common challenges requires continuous solidarity from all, and that the coming months will test the strength and durability of the multilateral system that this organization represents.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations stressed that diplomacy, debate and negotiation are the best tools for a more peaceful world.
Last night, during the closing ceremony of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Guterres praised Abdullah Shaheed, the outgoing President of the General Assembly, "skills, vision and dedication."
He also looked forward to working with Tchapa Kuroshi, the new President of the General Assembly, noting that the new session would continue to test the multilateral system, cohesion and trust among member states.
