South Stadium, one of the eight stadiums for the FIFA Qatar 2022™ World Cup, has been certified by the global sustainability assessment system (GSAS) in the gold category of operation, in recognition of the commitment to sustainability standards in the operational processes of the stadium, which is the first fully constructed stadium specifically to host the championship competitions expected at the end of this year.
With the GSAS gold certificate in operation, the highest sustainability rating from the gulf research and development organization (GORD), the south stadium becomes the first stadium world cup awarding the three GSAS certificates, having previously received design certificates and construction practices.
The award ceremony saw representatives of the high commission for projects and legacy, FIFA, the gulf research and development organization (GORD) and a support company specializing in facilities management services.
"As we continue to establish new standards in the sustainability space, the high committee is keen to develop skills and capabilities, and to improve the level of operations and resources in Qatar’s facilities and construction management sector, ensuring that world cup stadiums meet all aspects of sustainability," said Ghanem Al Kuwari, Deputy Director General of Technical Services at the High Commission for Projects and Legacy, in a speech at the ceremony.
"We held comprehensive training sessions during the evaluation process before obtaining the certificate, to ensure the best possible results for south stadium and for our team that operates the unique world cup edifice."
Dor Al Mir, director of sustainability and environment at the high commission for projects and legacy, said the prestigious certification is a clear demonstration of continued efforts to meet the sustainability strategy commitments of the Qatar 2022 world cup and expressed pride that Qatar is the first world cup host country to adopt these extensive assessments of the operational processes of the stadiums.
